Three Paths to Kafka on Azure
If you need Apache Kafka-compatible event streaming on Azure, you have three credible options. The right choice depends on your team's operational maturity, cost sensitivity, and feature requirements.
Option 1: Azure Event Hubs (Kafka Surface)
Azure Event Hubs exposes a Kafka-compatible endpoint — your existing Kafka producers and consumers can connect with minimal code changes (just change the bootstrap server and add SASL credentials). This is not Apache Kafka running inside Azure; it is Event Hubs with a Kafka protocol adapter.
Best for: Teams already invested in Azure, who want zero Kafka infrastructure management and are comfortable with Event Hubs' feature set.
Limitations: No Kafka Streams, no KSQL, no Schema Registry (available separately via Confluent), limited consumer group management, and no ZooKeeper/KRaft configuration. Retention is up to 90 days (Premium tier).
Option 2: Apache Kafka on AKS (Self-managed)
Run open-source Apache Kafka on Azure Kubernetes Service using Strimzi or Confluent for Kubernetes operators. You get 100% feature parity with Kafka — Streams, Connect, KSQL, Schema Registry, MirrorMaker 2.
Best for: Teams with Kubernetes expertise who need full Kafka features and want to control every aspect of the cluster.
Limitations: Significant operational overhead — you own broker upgrades, ZooKeeper/KRaft management, storage tuning, and disaster recovery. Requires dedicated platform engineering time.
Option 3: Confluent Cloud on Azure
Confluent's fully managed Kafka service available natively in Azure Marketplace with Private Link support. Full Apache Kafka compatibility, Schema Registry, ksqlDB, Kafka Connect managed connectors, and Confluent's control plane.
Best for: Teams who want full Kafka features without operational overhead and are willing to pay the premium for fully managed service.
Limitations: Higher cost than Event Hubs for equivalent throughput. Egress costs when data leaves Confluent's network.
Decision Matrix
- Need Kafka Streams or KSQL → AKS or Confluent Cloud
- Already on Azure, want zero ops → Event Hubs
- Need Schema Registry → Confluent Cloud (or Event Hubs + Confluent Schema Registry)
- Existing Kafka producers to migrate → Event Hubs (easiest migration)
- High-throughput, cost-sensitive → Event Hubs Premium
- Full Kafka + managed ops → Confluent Cloud
